Question:
Though I don't play guitar, I've always been a huge fan of the SG body style. Imagine my disappointment when I found out that Gibson stopped making the SG bass. Does anyone have any experience with Epiphone's SG bass? If the price is any indication (as it seems to be most of the time), it's probaby not a great instrument, but I maintain hope that it's a decent axe, as it seems to be my last hope at owning an SG bass (other than paying way too much for a used Gibson SG bass, that is)... Any input?
Answer:
I cannot comment on the Epi SG bass, but I did own an Epi T/Bird bass, so I am thinking the principle is the same. Quality of finish was ok, nothing special, the Pick-ups were very poor quality and hummed like buggery. The bolt on neck had been set at the wrong angle and out of the box I had to insert shims to get a decent action. The nut was set far too high giving noticeably sharp notes at the first fret, this too I had to file down with circular needle files. The tone controls had very little effect and the overall tone was basically MUD! I sold the bass after about 4 weeks as, clearly, it was never going to be played. Since then I have owned a genuine T/Bird and it was a totally different and beautiful animal, great for rock but fails with any other style IMHO. I played a short scale SG bass but apart from the Gibson 'growl' I did not like it at all. On my suggestion, there are better bass's out there for the money. Sorry Epi, but it does not cut the mustard.......
