Crown Drum set value

Tagged As: Sonor Drum Set

Question:
I have a 1972, Japanese-made, blue sparkle Crown drum set (20 bass, 10 tom-tom, & 12 floor tom). Does anyone know if this is worth anything as a 'vintage' set, and if so how much?

Answer:
In general, Japanesse sets don't carry the vintage prices the American counterparts do. If they're in good condition, with decent bearing edges, you can probably get $200-$300 depending on who you can sucker... My first drum set was a Crown (black pearl) which I got in about 1964. Not the best quality but it didn't sound bad. I still have the snare drum. I don't know if you will get vintage prices. You are the only other person I have met in 34 years that had a Crown set. Are you from the east cost? I would be curious as to where you originally purchased them. My drummer is wanting to get rid of his Sonor set but is very unsure of where to start the pricing at. Could any of you rhythmicly gifted folks please e-mail me with your recommended prices and i'll pass it on to him. The set is as follows: 1985 Sonor Phonic Plus Great condition Rosewood shells interior and exterior 6 pieces 16x22 16x16 10x14 9x13 8x12 6 1/2x14 (snare) Your input is greatly appreciated. These drums are available for purchase in the Pacific Northwest so if anyone is interested buying or seeing them, please drop me an e-mail

I had a set of crown -purchased in 1968 at Hiltons in Albany NY. This is the first hit i have ever gotten mentioning Crown Drums - decent 4 peice set of light gold sparkle - traded in 1972 for a set of Ludwig Standard champagne sparkle made on August 16, 1969 - about a week before Woodstock. Still have em - 2 of my sons have played them and moved on to other instruments. I have pics Jcarney@nycap,.rr.com

My first set of drums were a Crown 4-piece in dark blue pearl, bought in 1967 in San Diego. They've been recovered and are now being played by my newphew. They always sounded ok, though a little hard to tune. But the stands and snare hardware were horrible. From what I hear, yours would be worth about $200 tops, assuming they are in good condition.

There's a set for sale in the Orange County, CA craigslist on 5/24/2007. Orange sparkle 4 piece. This forum came up first on google...I was curious about them, too. The ad says that Crown became either Tama or Pearl.

I was given a set of Black Pearl Crowns for Christmas, in 1965, bought from Wallachs music city in W Covina, Ca. The Crown badge was put on, but the kits were not made by Crown. They actually had a mid high end line of electronics audio gear. I have to dig back in my files to find the actual maker of Crown drums. When I find it, i'll post it.

My first set was a crown 5-piece blue oyster finish my parents got me in 1973-74 [can't remember the exact time]. I also never met anyone who had Crown's. They sounded kinda crappy but they were all I could afford plus they taught me an important lifelesson.....never compromise! ONE of the reasons I think I worked hard to establish a successful career was to have cash that would let me always be able to buy quality gear. That lesson made that set a good buy! :-)
