Double bass drum technique

Tagged As: Double Bass Drum Technique

Question:
For practice material I use Stone's Stick Control for the Snare Drummer, but played with the feet (obviously). Has anyone got some other good exercises for developing this technique?

Answer:
I'm pretty sure that Sandoval is one-footed, but there a ton of bands that two foot blast: Disgorge, Deeds of Flesh, Cryptopsy, and quite a few others in that vein as well. Most of Max Duhamels blasts sounded like sixteenths with the hands and quarters with the feet (foot), which I've never heard anybody before or after do. I don't play drums (yet) and can't read music (yet), but I'm guessing you're referring to the metronome blast of Duhamel's? That shit is so rad. There's a band called Viu Drakh from Germany with a drummer who does that, although his blast isn't nearly as fast and they play crusty grind and not crazed Canadian chaos. You are asking about double bass. I can only suggest that you buy yourself a five piece double bass drum kit, two bass drums! That is if you want to play any sort of metal. Fuck using a double kick pedal. Get behind the kit with a walkman and start listening to your cds while you play. You can only develop a style that truly fits your needs this way. Of course there are basic rudiments, or pickedille rhythms you can learn to add flavor to your fills. Playing fast is something you build over the years which includes blasting. Better not ask about that until you can coordinate your feet. As for equipment I suggest removing the felt beater shit that comes with the standard kit and screwing on skateboard wheels. For a precise attack just buy a hard plastic beater of some sort and get Dan Mar metal kick pads.
