drum n bass, jungle, big beat, breakbeat defined

Tagged As: Drum N Bass

Question:
ok here's my dilemma, i have about 30 techno cds i've picked up that i like, but I don't know how to classify them so as to know which genres I prefer. Here's what (I think) I know. Drum 'n' Bass - Yes, I love Autechre. And the more ambient stuff from Aphex Twin, & also Squarepusher is great. Ambient - Orbital, the Orb Breakbeat - Crystal Method, Fluke, the Prodigy Big Beat - Chemical Brothers, Fatboy Slim Acid Jazz - DnB - DJCam, DJ Krush, Urbalizer so could y'all a. make further recommendations on these areas b. help me understand what makes each of these bands fit into these categories?

Answer:
That's not really an accurate classification for these guys. Drum 'N' Bass is a genre more accurately represented by artists like Goldie, Roni Size/Reprazent, Grooverider, Photek, J Majik, Source Direct, LTJ Bukem, Optical, Ed Rush... What you're talking about I've heard labeled as Cornish Acid. Squarepusher is probably the most influenced by drum 'n' bass, and this style (along with ¦Ì-ziq who's sort of between Squarepusher and Aphex Twin) has been sometimes referred to as drill 'n' bass. Orbital doesn't make much Ambient music, they're long lasting survivors of the british techno. The Orb isn't purely ambient either -- they make dance tracks like Little Fluffy Clouds and they also deal in dub. Breakbeat as a name for a genre is really misleading. It's more a technique borrowed from hip hop, which was used in techno and house tracks around '92 or so. For an example, listen to Prodigy's first album. Breakbeats got faster and faster and eventually evolved into jungle, which was later renamed into the more politically correct name drum 'n' bass. The artists you mention above do use breakbeats, but to group them as breakbeat really doesn't mean much. If you like the Prodigy's last album Fat Of The Land, you'd probably like the Junkie XL album, if you like Prodigy's last to albums, you'd probably like Meat Beat Manifesto. That's a label that's been applied to their style. Also called Amyl house. As for recommendations, try The Propellerheads, Bentley Rythm Ace, Death In Vegas, Jedi Knights, Fatboy Slim's other aliases which are Norman Cook, Beats International, the Pizza Man. You probably mean the Herbalizer. These guys like to call themselves hip-hop DJ's, and the music they make is probably best described as instrumental abstract hip-hop. They may use a lot of jazz samples, but they are not acid jazz -- and they are certainly not drum 'n' bass. As for recommendations
