Question:
Over on another newsgroup I gave the following advice on how to position the various parts of your drum kit. This was for someone who doesn't live anywhere near me - it's loads easier to sort out in person. In case I need these instructions again I thought I'd offer them up for feedback from you guys. Bear in mind that these are aimed at beginners who are largely clueless as to how to fine tune the position of the bits of the kit. Also, I appreciate that everyone has their own preferences - but instructions to put them where ever feels most comfortable is not going to help this type of person. What do you reckon?
Answer:
Heh, I've never seen the method of taking the drum stool as a reference point for the drums before. Generally, I make it a point to have the drums as horizontally as possible while still being comfortable to play and to minimize the distance between different drums. However, I'm pretty tall and hence it's easy for me to get the drums low enough to look down on them, and have them horizontally. If you're smaller this may not be that easy to do while still maintaining the 'ideal' seat height. Again, though, this is pretty different for many people. You have people like Lars Ulrich (yech) who sit really, really low and then there's Mike Portnoy and the really tall Gene Hoglan who are almost standing up. Also, the ride cymbal is a bit of a pickle. I like having it really low and horizontal over my bassdrum, while others have it high and almost vertical.
