New drum kit??!!

Tagged As: Tuning A Drum Set

Question:
I know absolutely nothing about drum kits. I've got pretty good at playing them ... but i still have no idea about whats hot and whats not, how to tune them etc. About a year ago i went out a year ago and bought a Tama Swingstar and recently put some Remo Pinstripes on them. However, as much as i persist with tuning them they just sound absolute shite. This is partly because i have to use a zildjian Crash/Ride as my only cymbal, and partly because they just sound shite. Is this me / my tuning / or is it time to think about buying that nice shiny new kit. If so, does anyone have any suggestions for a suitable setup? (Im into rock / grunge - bush, oasis, blur, moist, The usual bunch of groups). Any help would be really appreciated.

Answer:
There's always been that timely discussion about getting a good sound and tuning drums. I'm no expert at tuning (is there really such a thing?), but I'm pretty sure that any series of a brand name kit (Tama, Pearl, Yamaha, Sonor, Ludwig, etc.) can get a pretty good sound (pending the drums are structurally sound and true). Granted the more expensive models can yield a truely awesome drum sound, but since cost limitation is usually the biggest things that stands between you and your dream kit, try working with the one you have. It would be almost impossible for anyone on the web to know exactly what problems you might be having, but I can assume that it lies in tuning. Try checking out Bob Gatzen's tuning video or maybe as a refernce point, take a look at Bill Powelson's drum page at: http://www.catalog.com/drummers/lowdrm3.html He provides a lot of insight on a variety of drum topics, from tuning to buying a drumkit to odd time signatures.
