Question:
I am shopping for a drum machine and have found alot of machines which I know little about. It is hard to learn about roland/boss products from the past 5 yrs,and i would be grateful for opinions and expertise regarding the dr rythym and tr x0x lines as well as any other obscure machines in the $75-$250 range.
Answer:
The DR-110 and 220 are not really worth your time. If you are looking at the TR- series, the TR505 or 606 is a good entry level machine. I would recommend checking out the new BOSS units . . . the DR-550 and DR-660. These are VERY POWERFUL and the samples they use are excellent. I think it was during 1992. (In the December issue they had a big rview, but I'm not sure it covered drum machines.) The drum machine review was in the same issue as the FX review. I'm using a Roland R-70 and I'm very satified with it! It's similar to the Boss DR-550(?) but it has fewer samples and it has built in tapesync(II). It comes with lots of TRx0x samples and with some built in effects, but no dist. - o - BTW, anyone found a drum machine with a built in dist-box? Since most synths and drum machines still doesn't have digital outputs and most FX-boxes doesn't either, I like the effects to be built in the machine.
