Question:
I downloaded a drum machine for my PC that is freeware called hammerhead. It seems much easier to use than the other one I tried a while back (name escapes me). That said, does anyone here use this to program in basic jazz or blues drum loops? I downloaded the jazz samples but I'm still having trouble getting a beat I like.
Answer:
99% of the drum loops I have heard would make you want to shoot the drummer. The rest are just bad. I have never seen a simple groove with brushes in any genre. I know I have probably been looking in the wrong places, but I end up creating something by editing a sample with cooledit. I took a look at the software in question. It appears to be a pattern-based drum machine emulator, designed for jungle/drum n' bass stuff. Trying to write authentic sounding swing grooves with that unit would likely be a losing proposition. I think the OP would get better results finding a freeware sample playback module, loading it with appropriate drum samples and writing drum parts for it with a sequencer. There's stuff out there at places like Shareware Music Machine. http://www.hitsquad.com/smm/
