Question:
I'm trying to get a Yamaha RY-30 Drum machine to sync to cubase. (as in Cubase starts the drum machine, and syncs to midi clock from cubase) my eventual goal is to drop the patterns into cubase from the drum machine. so far i have been unsucessful. i set the drum machine to sync to external midi clock, and the drum machine starts when i press play or record in cubase, but the drum machine plays everything way way fast. like 2 or 3x to fast... this happens with the midi out plugged only into the in on the drum machine. (i am running everything thru a motu microexpress... ) its not a thru or echo back problem that i can tell... i've tried about everything in the syncronization setup, changed the clock resolution, etc. etc... any ideas ???
Answer:
If I recall it right the MOTU interface can be set to send MIDI Clock to all of its MIDI outputs. It might be possible that the MIDI output with the Drum machine will transmit double MIDI clock information, as a result the drum machine will run twice as fast. Please check the MIDI interface settings. Also make sure that the drum machine does not transmit MIDI clock while doing this, because the MIDI interface might also Thru the clock and produce the same result. If you cant this config to work you can try what Ive done (with cubase XT): 1 - Sync cubase to the drum machine and record the MIDI into cubase 2 - return cubase to normal internal sync and use the drum machine as a sound module This has the advantage of giving you Cubase graphical editing of the MIDI drum data.
