Cool Edit Pro and Synching my Roland Drum Machine?

Tagged As: Roland Drum Machine

Question:
I have CEP 1.1 and I want to synch it to my Roland R-70 Drum machine. How can I do this exactly? CEP only sync's to SMPTE and my drum machine has MIDI in/out and Tape synch. The JL Cooper PPS2 sounds interesting but would it solve my problem. What does it do exactly? Are there any other solutions???

Answer:
The PPS2 and a few other devices like it (Midiman currently makes a couple, and Yamaha, Roland, Music Quest, and TASCAM have in the past) take a MIDI input and send out SMPTE time code, or vice versa - take in SMPTE and spit out MIDI time code. This isn't exactly what you want, though. I don't recall Cool Edit's sync options. When I was reviewing the Gina interface, I was able to sync it up to SMPTE time code from a tape using the SMPTE input on my Music Quest MQX32M card. I didn't look for a MIDI sync option on it. But I did test Cakewalk Pro Audio which does have MIDI Time Code sync, and sent it the same time code, comverted to MIDI by a Music Quest Frame Lock (similar to the PPS2 in this function) and it worked fine. That was a kind of roundabout route to sync but I was just trying to see if it worked. I'm pretty sure your drum machine puts out MIDI, so assuming you have some sort of MIDI interface on your computer, you should be able to input it by that path. Check Cool Edit's sync options again and see if it'll take MIDI. Seems like that's so much more common than SMPTE that they would have provided it. If not, check out Cakewalk. I know that works.
