Question:
It looked almost a Rocker series tom. However, I'm no Ludwig expert, and I don't remember seeing any 3-ply concert toms from Ludwig before. I emailed the seller a few days ago and still haven't gotten a response. Thought you guys might be able to help. All I really want to know is what kind of wood the shell is composed of.
Answer:
It looks to be a classic 6-ply shell. At one time Ludwig offered rocker series drums with classic lugs back in the early 80's but they usually had the black/white badges. Ok, but the seller claims that this drum is only 3-ply and is a modified concert tom? According to the Ludwig website, their current concert toms are Italian Poplar, but are also 7-ply (I think). You know what wood type these concert toms were made of in the 70's? If it was 3-ply it was either maple/poplar or mahogany/poplar. I've got a set of 70's bongos that are 3-ply with reinforcing rings and granitone paint, but you can see from the grain that the wood is mahogany - even through the paint
