Question:
I haven't played for almost 15 years. But now my son is taking drum in 4th grade band and he is really loving it (snare only right now). He is also making me want to play again Is there a set for the both of us - one where I could get back my chops and he could also use to learn and grow. Specific make and model (and price range) if you can would be greatly appreciated. This could even be a good bonding experience if one of us learns to share.
Answer:
Taye drums would be your best bet for both price and quality. George Lawrence can certainly help you with finding the best price and configuration. Several companies now market junior/intermediate kits in beginner- or entry-level lines with 18 bass drums. I would think you and your son could share one of those without too much difficulty. OK, now to respond to the question you actually asked: One such kit would be the Ludwig Accent Jr., which has a street price a few bucks on either side of $400 for a 5-piece with an 18 BD, 10, 12, and 14 toms, and a 5x13 snare. Tama is also soon releasing a new kit called the Stagestar in exactly the same sizes for about the same price. Mapex has a kit in their V series (model #V5834T) again in those sizes. It costs a little more (~$450 on average) but is available in more different finishes. Taye has a number of 4- and 5-piece models available in its Spotlight and RockPro series with 18 bass drums. They are not as generally available as the aforementioned three kits are, but George Lawrence, who posts here often, is a Taye dealer and would be happy to sell you one, I'm sure! I haven't seen anyone openly advertising Taye prices but I'm sure they're at least competitive with the above.
