Question:
1. What, if any, are the sonic differences between brass and bronze Ludwig snare drums? 2. Is a Black Beauty essentially the same as a brass snare drum but with the antique black finish? Any sonic differences? I've currently got what I think is an LM400. It's hard to tell, but it looks like plain tarnished metal underneath the peeling plating and a Lud-A-Loy sticker inside. (That's not aluminum is it?) It sounds pretty good. Anyway, my question is this: would it be a step up to go with any of the above mentioned drums (bronze, brass or black beauty) or is my current drum giving me a sound as good as these other Ludwigs?
Answer:
You ought to have a plain Jane Supra, which is chromed Aluminum, and is what is more or less touted as 'the most recorded snare in music history'. Someone else ought to be able to fill you in on the Bronze/Brass/Beauty thing. AFAIK though a Beauty pretty much IS just a brass drum with the black nickel. Optional hammering has an effect on sound and I believe all 4 materials are available with hammering. After all these years of being a fairly decent drummer and I finally find out what kind of drum I have... hehe Yep but, dont think for a second the heavy brass shelled Supra is the better sounding drum. I have played both. For me the Ludalloy Supra is way better sounding then the brass one. I won't. I plan on sampling drums before purchasing. And it's been hard lately finding equipment for sampling. I go to big stores and they are flooded with DW and Yamaha. No Ludwig except John Bonham's vistalite. I found and played a couple Dunnetts though. Nice
