Ludwig vintage snare question

Tagged As: Ludwig Vintage Snare Drum

Question:
I just bought a beautiful old ludwig snare off a friend. Now I need to know if there's an easy way to check if it¡äs a steel or brass one (I think it¡äs the later.. It¡äs kinda heavy and yellowish on the inside). ALso, is there a way to use the serialnumber and track it down

Answer:
http://lee.vinson.net/badges/ludwig/ Try this link, it shows different badges and types of drums. Can't really track by serial number. Try a magnet on the drum, if it does not stick chances are to be a brass or chrome over brass. THE only way to tell for sure is to take a lug off and scrape a bit of chrome off. If it is kind of flat gray it is a Ludaloy and if it is goldish, yellowish, it is brass. Nope, a magnet won't tell you anything - Ludalloy isn't magnetic, nor is brass. Take off a lug, and with a screwdriver, scrape off a smidgeon of the chrome at one of the screw holes for the lug - if it's pewter underneath the chrome, it's Ludalloy. If it's brass-colored, it's brass. The badges overlapped the different models, so you can't depend on them to identify the composition of the metal shell, although the majority of transition badges and pre-serial numbered badges were brass - however there are many exceptions to this, so it's not an accurate litmus test.
