Question:
Well to help with the first part did ludwig ever make any other clear sets. Id also like to know how to identify if they are 70's vistalites. Are these drums worth anything? Ive noticed many people auctioning them off as if they might be collectors items.
Answer:
1. How to identify them? If you can see through them, they're Vistas. (yes I know they made opaque versions of them...) 2. They were ONLY made in the 70's. 3. They're worth as much as any moron on any day is willing to pay for them - witness the 26 amber Vistalite bass drum that somebody on ebay was selling for $2500 - and I think someone bought it. Thus, it was worth $2,500 to the guy who bought it. 4. They are collector's items in that they aren't made anymore and there's a certain nostalgia to owning a set like that. Bring back bell bottoms, wide ties, polyester suits and afros on white guys. Groovy man! Personally, I think Vistalites sound like shit and they're too fragile, but to each his own. See Ludwig Yesterday & Today 1909-1999 (Paolo Sburlati's Ludwig Vintage Drum Collerction) book by Paolo Sburlati. Several pages are devoted to photos and descriptions of Vistalite kits in Paolo's private collection. Years appear to range 1973-1978. The Vistalite sound evokes a drum making era that will unlikely be revisited.
