Question:
has anybody had any experience with electronic drum kits, namely Yamaha's DTX-based kits like the DS10, Roland's TDE7K, and Dauz kits? I'm interested in how they compare with each other as well as to the real thing with respect to sound, feel, reliability, etc...
Answer:
I own the Yamaha kit, and I am very pleased with it. The pads are very sensitive and have good bounce, and (IMHO) the DTX brain is the best cur I tried the Roland in the shop many times before waiting patiently to try the Yamaha. I found the Roland pads very hard on my hands, and the programming of the Roland brain far from intuitive. The Roland sounds are good though. Dauz appears to make =very= good pads, but they are not fully compatible with either Roland or Yamaha electronics, because they are either single trigger or dual trigger pads from Dauz, while both Roland and Yamaha want piezo-switch dual-zone pads (Dauz really ought to consider making these!) to permit you to use their brains to full capacity (cymbal chokes, two sounds assignable to a pad, etc.) If Dauz is your choice, the Alesis brain makes more sense, and in fact that is what Dauz recommmends at his web site. The Alesis brain does not seem to have the flexibility of either the Roland or Yamaha systems. Alesis, btw, was supposed to be coming out with their own pad set, with moongel pads. Sounds cool, but apparently there were design problems, and it has never been released. Anyone know what is happening with that? There are other kits out there too. If I had really =big= bucks to spend, I would look at the stuff from ddrum. Their pads have real heads and rims, and although they are not as acoustically quiet, they have incredible feel and sensitivity. Yamaha was my choice for pads and brain. The rack that comes with the DS10 is not the most flexible -- I would have preferred ball-joint pads for easier set-up -- but I have not had a problem with it. Yamaha tells me they considered ball joints, but rejected the idea as too expensive. Maybe they will make them that way in the future.
