Question:
I'm looking for a good second kit to go out gigging with...the thread about the Rhythm Travelers kind of got me curious about other small, compact kits. Heard mostly bad about the Remo Legero, though there's a few die-hard fans who swear by them... One I've heard a lot of good things about is Yamaha's Hip Gig kit. Looks pretty sturdy and the setup/takedown could be pretty quick. Not sure about that throne, though... Anyone play these before? What's your experience with them?
Answer:
I bought the hip gig Sr which is still a compact, but the sizes are larger than the Rick Marotta model. I LUV this kit!! I did use holz to put a 4 hole in the front head of the kick though. 18x22 muffled and ported. Added a clamp for a 3rd cymbal and off gigging I go! Ive been playing with the morrata kit for over a year now at regular gigs, and its worth it man. sounds great, and its very easy to tear down and set up. whenever i gig, i use the hipgig, plus 2 extra cym. stands, and so i can carry my whole kit into a bar in one trip. to bags for the kit, one bag for the stands, cymbag and stick bag, in one trip. My bass player and guitarist are jelous that i can take care of my shit quicker than them. if you have any questions about the kit, email me, i can answer anything about it. ive giged with it for a year now. peace. Hoagy Ryan Hoagy Hoagland I've been scoping out the Manu Katche Hip Gig Jr. for some time now, and I finally got a chance to play it today. Man, you gotta try it out --it's sweet. I loved it so much I almost bought it, but my practical side had to go and ruin it for me (I need to ebay some stuff first). Comes w/ 600 series hardware (hihat, 2 cym stands, snare stand, pedal). It doesn't pack into itself, but these drums are small enough where it's not even an issue. Great set for ~$600
