I'm a newbie at playing electric bass guitar, and have been browsing this newsgroup for a bit. It sometimes seems as if everybody here plays in rock bands. (When people say they play jazz, they seem almost apologetic sometimes.) I'm wondering what other musical combos are using electric bass guitar these days. (Mariachi? Polka? Wedding trios?)

Bass guitar fits lots of music not just rock. It's even popular in jazz though traditionally an upright is considered more stylish! :) Jazz cats often like the more energetic feel of an upright rather than a bass guitar. However, there is another school that loves the potential complexity and expanded musical range that the 6 string bass guitar gives. So in a sense the upright and bass guitar truly are two different instruments but both can and DO play jazz.
