I've heard tell that early Duane Eddy recordings would double the upright bass line on electric guitar. Is this so?

Answer:
The authentic way is called Tic Tac bass, and is achieved by doubling the upright line with a Danelectro 6-string bass (tuned EADGBE one octave lower than a guitar). Play it with a pick, but mute the strings with your plucking hand or with a bit of foam rubber near the bridge
