Has anyone attempted to playing pedal steel guitar parts with a sampler?

Tagged As: Pedal Steel Guitar Parts

Question:
Has anyone attempted to playing pedal steel guitar parts with a sampler? What techniques are used by you and is there any recommended cdroms for samplers that are good? To me, the proper way would be split the keyboard in to zones (chords on one side of the keyboard, and single notes on the other). I do have a Roland Guitar Synth that I'm thinking about using in conjunction with the sampler, if the technique on keyboard gets too involved. I've seen a few people play pedal steel parts with a DX-7 and they sounded good. One CD I was thinking about getting was from Sampleheads, Whole Lotta Country. The problem with that cd, is that the samples aren't looped. It is strictly an audio cd. Any recommendations?

Answer:
Although I'm not particularly good at it, the best instrument that I have found for pedal-steel emulations is the Ensoniq TS-10. You can load in better samples, but the best feature is the held bend. Setting the bend to 2H allows you to hold a chord with the sustain pedal, hold one of the notes with your finger, and only bend the note the note held by your finger. As far as I know, this is the only keyboard that you can perform this technique with that lets you load your own samples.
