It is normally according to the guality of the guitar. Is it a high tech guitar like: Yamaha, Fender, Gibson or Martin? or is it another kind of guitar? If it is one of the latter, I wouldn't spend much on it. If it is the first, you would probably pay right at 200.00 or more if it is in good condition. But, it is worth it, if it is in good condition. If you are a beginner player, the chording will hurt your fingers. It will make it easier on you to find a guitar where the strings are closest to the fret board. The further away from the fret board the string are, the harder it is to play, and the more pain you are in. I believe a Fender is the best for a beginner

Because the guitar is a Yamaha, Gibson, Fender, does not mean it is a high tech guitar. This is far from the truth. Don't fall into that trap. Just because the guitar has a familiar brand name does not make it any better. There are some handmade custom guitars with high quality parts that can be bought for far less than those brand name guitars. Did you ever notice how the pros do a lot of heavy modifications on their brand name guitars. There are great guitars made by less known companies like Framus, Hagstrom, Guild, Gretsch, Hohner, Rickenbacher that are far better than the Yamaha, Gibson, Fender who seem better to the novice. If you want to buy a used guitar, look at how much use it has had and how much use it is still capable of giving. The cheaper guitar will most likely have cheaper quality parts. Brand name guitars may have cheap parts on them and they are coasting along on the fact that they are popular. Buy the best you can afford. The used guitar is the best buy. If you don't know much about guitars, take someone who knows guitars with you. It's exactly like buying a used car. The nice part about used guitars is the fact that some guitar sellers don't know any more about used guitars than some buyers. Close your eyes to the brand names on the guitar. The guitar that plays the best, sounds the best and has the best quality parts (tuners, bridge, pickups, pots, body, neck) is the one you are striving to find.
