Question:
I have an cheap, old, no-name electric guitar that I've applied a very unique, decorative finish to. It's sort of a decopage type technique that totally covers the surface of the guitar. I took the guitar around to a few local guitar shops to see if I could sell it but I got a puzzling reaction. First of all, everyone was very impressed by the quality and visual impact of the finish, one guy said some words to the effect of it's the 2nd coolest looking guitar I've ever seen. Two different shop owners even asked me if I would be interested in refinishing some guitars they had. The puzzling part was that everyone really seemed to like the guitar but no one was willing to make me an offer on it. I tried asking what would a guitar like this be worth on the open market? but no one seemed to know the answer. Perhaps the fact that it was such a cheap guitar underneath the finish is why nobody wanted to buy it, still I thought the decorative value alone would make it worth something.
Answer:
Most guitarists don't have the money to buy a piece of junk guitar for it's decorative value. Collectors of course want a factory finish on their guitars. So that leaves people who like to hang stuff on their walls.
