Did Joe Pass record/perform with his Epiphone Emperor?

Tagged As: Epiphone Joe Pass

Question:
Looks like Joe Pass is using a sunburst Epiphone Joe Pass Emperor (without a pickguard) on an instructional DVD I have (Joe Pass: The Blue Side Of Jazz).

Answer:
No, Joe Pass never structurally played an Epiphone Joe Pass. He may have used one on occasion in his last years but I have not heard one major recording with it. The only signature model he actually played was an Ibanez JP 20 (The Ibanez Joe Pass model) that he DID use live and on recordings from the late 70s and eighties onwards. Still, I vastly prefer the sound he had on the ES 175. The pick-up placement on the Ibanez Joe Pass was such that it sounds a bit trebly and tinny.
