Question:
I'm in the market for a better guitar strap (fender style guitar). As uncool as they look, I'm tempted by the X straps by Dare and Slider - they have got to be better for your back! I've seen some of the larger padded straps that look quite good also.
Answer:
I tried the Slider for awhile when my back was bothering me a bit, and it worked, it distributes the weight across both shoulders and also holds the guitar horizontal even if you're not hanging onto the neck, no more diving headstock. They are a little awkward to get in and out of, so if you change guitars on stage every couple of songs they might not be such a good idea. I would also use locking strap buttons as the ends of the strap aren't all that heavy and I can see them popping off at the worst time, I love the Schaller strap locks. In short, if you have back problems and don't need to switch instruments too often or too quickly, the Slider works as advertised.
