Question:
I've been playing guitar for a long time I'm talking years and years.and I never took a lesson before.I don't read music I just play music.I can play along with just about any song on radio by ear. but tell me to play a c chord or whatever and I'm lost unless I hear the chord then I'll say oh I know that chord. I've played that countless times..or say play this scale and I wouldn't have a clue what the hell your talking about..but I play scales that sound right to me all the time and have gotten very fast at it..the only problem is I have no clue if its a real scale or not lol...I know I have learned guitar all wrong but I just play to have fun with it....sorry for the book now to the question. should I go for lessons on music theory or real scales or just keep on doing what I'm doing and have fun with it...I don't have alot of free time and I don't want to spend a load on lessons rather use that money on a new guitar

Answer:
It sounds like you're at a point where learning some scales and stuff might not be a bad idea, but I think I would get a good book or find some stuff on the 'net...it all depends on what you want to learn. Knowing some theory and that can often lead you into some new creative areas, but you don't really need a teacher for that. OTOH, a teacher can often focus you in on things that you maybe hadn't thought of before. Just the fact that you are thinking about it would indicate that you're looking to get further along in what you are doing, and that's always good for a musician. I'd say go for it.

If you want to play with a group, you need to learn at least the basic chords. You already know where the finger positions are and what they sound like. You just need to give it some letters like E, A, D, C, and G. These are the basic chords. You will be surprised at how easy it is and what you've been missing all these years. What you described is called "playing by ear". It is a good thing, everybody's done it to some extent. I've been playing for 50 years and I still enjoy playing. Good luck.
