Question:
I've been playing for about a year and a half and I'm fed up with my inability. I tried to jam with a friend's band, and I end up playing uninspired rhythm because I can't figure out how to solo. What rhythm guitar techniques are there to learn (stuff like arpeggios, flatpicking) and what songs are good to learn different techniques with? Does anybody have a recommended lesson plan for guitar in general(such as learn to strum, learn bends, pitch harmonics blah blah)? I'm just sort of stuck in a place where i don't know what to learn and lessons are way to expensive.
Answer:
Have a look here http://www.digevent.com/events/consumer/music/guitar_mania/archives.asp I have recently picked the guitar up again after a ten year absence. I never considered my ability playing... more like irritating the fretboard. So earlier this year when the bug hit me to get another guitar, I took some time went looking for online resources. One of the best I found, at least for myself, was at http://www.digevent.com by a guy named Marc Seal. He has an archive of online lessons done in a video format. They are FREE... and his music theory classes put a log of things into perspective for me. I'm actually ENJOYING my instrument now. My current guitar was a kit I built from scratch. After a lot of work on it, it sounds sweet and the paint and hardware are all what I wanted. Add to that a Line6 POD and I'm in heaven. I can put my headphones on (I have a family who doesn't appreciate my music all the time... LOL) play away to my hearts content. Marc's lessons have dramatically improved my playing. I won't say he is for everyone, but if you're interested in learning more theory and some cool riffs, check him out. Like I said, it's free.
