Question:
I was reading the long thread about Gibson vs. Epi LP's - what insight does anyone have regarding 335-type guitars?
Answer:
The Epiphone 335-ish guitars are closer to the original in construction and tone than the LP-ish guitars are. You'll have to go through a bunch to get a good one, probably. And that's if you like the thick Epi neck shape; I don't. The nut's too skinny, and the neck's too thick on most of their guitars for me. Let's see, there's Heritage (made by the old Gibson guys), Ibanez (who makes Scofield's guitar), Hamer (good consistent quality at a lower price), and I've seen bunches of clones under different names - even Silvertone. I would stick with the first three for a high quality instrument; next I would start trying out Epis. It depends on how much cash you want to throw at it, really. Have you checked out the Epi Kat series? Pretty cool guitars there, when you find a good one. Not a 335 clone, though.
