what is the history with Gibson's Custom Shop?

Question:
If I could get a 335 that was a Custom Shop-built guitar, how much of a premium should I be expected to pay? Let's say I could get a sunburst, mid-80's 335, in very good shape, but obviously played, for $1200 - $1400 used at a shop or on eBay - how much for the same basic guitar (dot neck, stainless hardware, factory Grovers) but a Custom Shop?

Answer:
I've got an '85 (or so) Gibson 335 CS, and while I like the guitar well enough, I'd hardly call it top quality. Call me crazy, but when the paint actually goes *over* the neck binding in places, this isn't as good as it gets. The binding also has developed dark marks where the frets are ... looks like some kind of bleed through to me. AFAIK, the custom shop, at that time, consisted of guitar makers who didn't choose to go to Nashville at the time of the Gibson move (at least that's what I was told). The guitar plays well enough, but my '64-5 335 (stolen) buried this one in workmanship .....
