Question:
Anyone have opinions on new Gibson ES-135's? I mean as far as playibility, quality, workmanship, sound/tone? The have the P-100 stacked humbuckers. Anyone know how these P-100 puppies sound?
Answer:
I've tried a couple in stores. I thought it would be a cheap way into a Gibson neck. I didn't like them. Back in the '70's I had solid guitars with P-90's. I think that type of pickup is fine on a arch top, but too honky for my ears on SG, 335 style, Les Paul, etc. though when I hear other people play 'em they can sound good. Having said that, I will admit that through a little tube amp, an ES-135 has a neat soulful crunch when the bluesy edge shows up. But I didn't like the feel of the neck on two of the ones I tried, and couldn't get a jazz sound I like (Kenny Burrel - smooth). So I guess as a poorman's jazz box, I'd rather have a Korean arch-top. Though not many of those necks feel very Gibson either.
