Question:
I have been struggling for a year trying to find a good case for my old Gibson 355. The original case was crap and I needed to get a case immediately for a trip out of town. I settled on an SKB case which is not a bad cheap case, much better than either the new Gibson or Epiphone cases but I really need to get something better for the long term. The padding and case design of the SKB is well thought out but the metal is too light and I am not a fan of pop rivets on hinges.
Answer:
I made my own case. I used 1/4 inch 4 ply plywood for most of it. It did not cost too much. Yet it did cost about 50 to 70% what an ordinary guitar case would have cost. I made it quite large (44 inches X 18 inches X 5 1/2 inches). My guitar has 24 frets so it is quite long. I will be adding some compartments on each side of the neck and I figure after that, I will be able to stand on the case without it caving in and doing any damage to my guitar.
