Question:
I have recently purchased a Gibson ES175D Reissue in Vintage Sunburst. It is a wonderful guitar and I wish to perform with it whilst standing up. This presents me with a problem, because, although the guitar possesses a strap button through the tailpiece at its' base, there is none to be seen elsewhere (presumably people tied straps around the neck behind the nut in the old days). I would like to add a strap button in the vicinity of the heel of the neck of the guitar, but I am concerned about damaging the guitar.
Answer:
If you drill the right size pilot hole for the strap button screw, it won't harm the guitar to add a strap button on the back of heel. Just to be sure, talk to someone familiar with that model of Gibson to make sure you won't hit any internal neck mounting screws. I recently read that the back of the heel is better than the side, though I've put strap buttons in both places with good results. The side is weaker and doesn't seem to have an advantage so I put buttons on the back of the heel now.
