Question:
I have a question about Les Paul Basses, epiphone or gibson. Does anyone on the group use them? What are their characteristics of sound and playability? What are the differences between the epiphone and gibson, and the different gibson models? And lastly, do any well known bassists use them? Thanks in advance!!
Answer:
There were several variations of the Les Paul bass by Gibson. Most were solid bodies in the Les Paul single cut away shape with different types of PUs of different models. One of the more interesting is the Les Paul Recording bass which had low impedance PUs. The Les Paul Signature bass was a Gibson model made in 1973 made with a gold finish semi- hollow body in the ES335 double cut away shape with a single PU. Recently Epiphone has introduced the Jack Casady Signature bass which is based on the Les Paul Signature and is better quality than the normal Epiphone copies of Gibson models. Jack Casady himself is reported to use this bass for live performances. I have one and like it ALOT. Epiphones usually cost less than a Gibson and most people believe are of a somewhat lower quality, although this may not always be true. As far as I know all Les Paul basses are thru the body necks.
