Question:
I went and tried the Tokai ES-120, Gibson 333 and a Gibson 335. Tokai was second-hand, the two others were new (or ex-demo). As far as looks is concerned, the blonde Tokai was very nice but not hugely exciting whereas the cherry 335 looked gorgeous! Price? Gibson was 400 pounds more expensive. I went back and forth between the two and couldn't decide which one I liked more. I would have liked to try the Tokai with heavier strings and the Gibson with a better setup! In any case this is academic because the only way I could get either one was to part-exchange an amp (Rivera) and judging by the look on the shop owner's face he wasn't interested.
Answer:
So go and try a few more similar guitars. Anything similar, don't rule anything out until you've played it. And make sure the list you try includes a Gretsch! Seriously. I tried a couple of Tokais and the odd vintage Gibson, plus loads of others, but the Gretsch Hollowbody was the clear winner for me, and from what you describe, it might fit your bill too.
