How are the 400 series units particularly the first ones to come out?

Question:
Saw a 400 Series Peavey Bass Head 4 sale at a local pawn shop for $149. Looks like it is the first entry in the 400 series.

Answer:
I've owned numerous Peaveys and they are all very reliable. The amp you mention is, however, about 20 years old and not too great for several reasons. The heatsinks are only the rear plate (no fins) so they don't bias the transistors much to reduce heat. The resulting tone is rather sterile and cold. Also, the amp doesn't have much (or any) shielding so it is prone to pick up hum or buzz in some areas. And the particle board cabinet is a piece of junk.
