Is it advisable to buy an older Rickenbacker at a (hopefully) lower price for the sake of having the Rickenbacker sound?

Question:
I love the sound of the Rickenbacker bass, I don't love the price though, especially on new models. Is it advisable to buy an older Rickenbacker at a (hopefully) lower price for the sake of having the Rickenbacker sound? I'm not sure if these guitars do well over time.

Answer:
Don't know if you're in Oz or not, but in the US a 4003 can be had brandy-new online for $1300. That ain't half-bad for an American-made neck-through cult classic that's arguably the most beloved bass on earth.
