Question:
I play a washburn xb200 bass in a band with two guitar players and a drummer. We play in a small church basement that seats about 180 people. I like rock/blues music. Which amplifier would you recommend for my situation?
Answer:
Well it really depends on the type of sound you wish to achieve and what your budget is. Also do you want to go for a stack or a combo? Amps are such difficult things to suss out as there are so many of the damned things. I have a preference for Harkte, but that is because I like to have an attacking toppy sound with plenty of definition. The Cones are metal so have a tight metallic sound If you are looking for a richer sound I would look to Fender (Combos only)or Ashdown. My friend is a blues player and has an Ashdown ABM900 head with 4x10 and 15 cabs. He plays a Fender Jazz and it sounds gorgeous! But there are plenty out there! Look to get the maximum wattage for your money so you don't stretch the amp during your giggs, there is nothing worse than an amp clipping whilst playing. Also have a good equalizer on there so you can taylor you sound. Ashburn, to my understanding, don't do a combo, but Trace Elliot also produce good value amps that are very robust as do Ampeg. Basically, check out as many as you can for you budget, get the shop to give you the opportunity to try them all out and go with what you prefer not what the salesman wants you to buy (They are always targeted and sometimes have to push certain lines).
