Sorry if this is too off-topic, but I will ask anyway. I've been (mostly) lurking for several weeks and it seems that most of the posters here are musicians as well as recording enthusiasts. I am interested in electric bass and have been looking at the local pawn shops and used gear shops for a guitar and amp. I would like to get something that's not too pricey, but I don't want junk. What would you guys suggest for a decent entry level setup? Which gear should be avoided? I know this is a fairly wide open question, but I would appreciate any opinions.

I've checked out a few and then I tried one..mail order. I have the ESP LTD B-50.. in the two hundred dollar range there are several choices.. I just picked blind on this one. My first recommendation isn't what I have. It's what I would have had if they were out yet. Danelectro Rumor (I think that's what it's called..the newest one looks like the hearsay guitar shape). Under two hundred bucks and nice pickups...I think I'd have been very happy with it. The LTD B050 is also very ok, by me. 24 frets, 6 bolt neck.. p/j pickups... it's been here a couple of years and still plays and sounds like new. Washburn and Dean also have basses that I wouldn't be afraid to try, BUT.. I'd stay at 200, give or take twenty bucks, on all those brands. They generally get funky for under two hundred.
