Question:
I'm playing a double-bass for almost two years now (finger and bow). Because of my neighbours and extented time at work (means practise very late) I think about buying a electric upright. If I understand the various webpages right, there are a lot of bass-makers which make a kind of cross between a bassguitar and a doublebass (for example shorter strings). I want an Instrument which is as close as possible to a real 3/4 Double Bass (handling and sound NOT transportability). The Yamaha Silent Bass does look especially good in this compartment (except for the price). Does anybody has suggestions or experience with some very good or very bad instruments??? Which brands are their to check out?
Answer:
The Yamaha got boos and hisses from Bass Player Magazine in a recent review and I've heard from a Canadian owner who is trying to sell his. They have the feel and accomplish their mission as a practice bass, but their sound is poor as a performance instrument.
