Question:
I've been doing some research trying to find out what year my son's custom was made. Problem is that I found out on Gibson's web site that the custom's are numbered differently from the rest. You have to have a acrobat reader to get the serial number and every time I try downloading it my stupid server times out on me. Anyhow, it's a Les Paul Custom, serial number 94007364. Has the standard 8 digit serial numbers used for some time now, but the format of having the 1st and 5th digits as the years with digits 2 through 3 indicating the date made doesn't work. Additionally,. the last three digits that are supposed to indicate the production number, I think, doesn't jive with those list for their factory's either. Can anyone, help?
Answer:
As far as I know Customs are not numbered differently from the others. Certainly my '79 Custom is numbered as mentioned on the Gibson site. The number you have does not appear to be a valid number, and I don't believe it has anything to do with the fact that the guitar is a Custom.
