Question:
I've done tons of research on this subject, and I have a few quick questions. First of all, I currently have a Mackie 1604vlz that I use to track to an ADAT LX-20. It doesn't sound that bad really, however I'm not totally satisfied w/ the Mackie. I am considering my options at this point. Being that I'm not what I would consider a pro, spending thousands of dollars on a mixer is out of my budget.
Answer:
The one thing you need to keep in mind is that if you do go 16 track by adding another adat, you may need a mixer that has is designed to monitor tape returns while using the mic inputs (or whatever your source).
