Question:
Anyone out there have any experience in using static mixers and/or static mixer/heat exchanger combinations for continuous gas-liquid phase reactions?
Answer:
We have considerable experience in a range of highly exothermic gas/liquid reactions using static mixers+heat exchangers , at the lab, pilot and full-scale. These include chlorinations (eg,chloroparaffin and chloroacetic acids) and reactions with ethylene oxide. We successfully debottlenecked a number of large-scale chlorination processes by retrofitting static mixer technology to old processes. We also have experience in the use of static mixers for exothermic (often dangerous) liquid/liquid reactions, for example using azide as reactant. Batch processes can often be speeded up considerably by using this approach.
