Question:
Call me dumb, but I just can't figure this out. When I installed Cakewalk I must have clicked something that has henceforth turned all my Midi files into Cakewalk files, and now I can't send them to anyone else. What pains me even more is that I am unable to send my own Cakewalk compositions to any of my friends to hear unless they have Cakewalk as well. Can someone please tell me what I have to do in order to disable this function of Cakewalk automatically saving anything to do with mid as a '.wrk' file?
Answer:
Cakewalk defaults to saving in .wrk format. You must change the type to save as from Normal to MIDI, each time you save a file. If you open a MIDI file and edit it, and select save, as opposed to save as, it will save as MIDI. If MIDI doesn't appear on the list in the type drop down, I'd guess that means that your file has NO MIDI tracks in it. You cannot save audio-only files as MIDI, since it lacks MIDI data. No audio tracks will be saved in a MIDI file either, since there is no mechanism to convert audio to MIDI directly (Cakewalk Pro has pitch to MIDI, but it is nowhere near sufficient to do a universal, automatic conversion).
