Question:
I am considering the purchase of a set of Fostex PM-2 monitors, primarily based on the bang-for-the-buck factor. I have found a few mixed reviews, but not enough to draw any solid conclusions. My studio is pretty large (18 ft x 20 ft with a vaulted ceiling), so I have a desire to get something in this size/power range. I do not need, nor can I afford, pro-quality stuff. I'm trying to put a coherent system together to produce some decent demos. The system will likely include a VF160EX, RNC compressor, and a gaggle of mics that I am also trying to figure out. Any opinions ?
Answer:
Fostex seems mostly to be marketing these things to the broadcast industry, so you might have better luck looking for reviews in places like Radio World. I played with some for a while, and they didn't have great low end, but they didn't have out of control low end either. You could hear the crossover point, but the midrange wasn't too bad and they didn't do a bad job getting natural vocals. You could certainly mix on them and not feel too bad, as long as you had some other way to check low end. I've certainly worked on many worse monitors.
