Question:
I'm a musician also. If I may, I'd suggest that all you need is a simple 4-track recorder (Tascam is a popular brand) that you'll be able to find at Sam Ash or any other music store. This will be easy to use and perfect for just keys, vocals, and guitar. Back in the old days, we were able to get a full band recorded on one of these by bouncing tracks down (he'll learn how) until we had the money to get an 8 track recorder. Perfect for a budding songwriter, and not crazy expensive.
Answer:
he's lucky to have to have such an aunt, whatever you decide. tascam is a very good entry (around $300 for 4 track analog). For double the price could go digtial, Fostex has an 8 track digital workstation with built in CD burner. by no means cheap, a decent investment, but a lot a vaule, and he'll never need to go to a studio to cut a demo. for my 11th birthday i got a slinky that wouldn't slink, and we liked it!
