Question:
I need information please. I am considering buying my husband a Fostex X-14 4-track recorder. He is a musician, playing blues and jazz guitar in a local supper club, and would like to be able to make decent quality tapes of his work to sell to people who ask. He uses an Alesis drum machine for his rhythms, and plays guitar and sings. He needs something simple to use that will allow him to lay down one track at a time, and hear one track as he lays down another. Will the Fostex x-14 do this? And is this machine worth buying? I know I could spend more money and get something more advanced, but his needs are very simple, and our budget is very limited. Any information is appreciated
Answer:
I had the X-14 and it's crap, nearly unusable for overdubbing. Same with the Tascam Porta-02. I'd stay away from any of the cheap 1-7/8 ips 4-tracks, unless you get to try it first. I suggest you go a step up; that is, find something similar but with the faster (3-3/4 ips) tape speed. Candidates: Fostex X-24, Fostex X55, Tascam 414, Yamaha MT50.
