Question:
I've wanted to replace my old Fostex x-15 for a while now so I could remix some old cassette stuff. But I've noticed most of the old ones still in any kind of shape are suffering from an epidemic of heads locking in the play position... anyone know what this problem is and how to fix it?
Answer:
Those old things actually run on a rubber band. If you open it up you will see that the working parts just ware out. The x15 has notches that stop and start the actions. They just get old and worn. There isn't much you can do to them unless the problem is that the tape isn't moving and then you can actually just replace the rubber band.
