the cassette mechanism on my fostex XR-7 has started making a clicking noise when it plays tapes (any tape). the clicking noise is not present during FFWD or REW. does anyone know an easy way to solve this or is it a case of taking the unit to be repaired by a fostex agent.

If it is only noise coming from the tape path (i.e., not coming out of the audio out) then my advice is to check the tape path for debris, etc. The FF and REW functions lift the pinch roller from the capstain, so I would check those as well as the tape/erase heads an guides. Also try a new/different tape.
