Question:
I'm looking for a good software multitrack recorder plus looper. I've already read up on Live 2 and Sonar XL 2.0. I'm looking for both the expensive higher end ones and the cheaper ($50 or less ones). Also can anyone tell me of good newsgroups where I might go to ask this question?
Answer:
Honestly, I've never tried Sonor or Ableton, but for me, Sonic Foundry's Acid is fantastic. I have used it a little as a recorder, and it is OK for that application, but I have better software for that. However, as a loop/sample constructor, manager, and player, it is unparalleled. You can download a demo version to see how it works and there are tons of free Acid loops for downloading on the net. Also, the specialty versions (like Acid DJ, Rock, Latin, and Techno) include the basic software and a starter collection of loops in that style. Acid Latin is readily available on ebay and elsewhere in the $10 range, and worth it (to me at least) just for the Latin loop library. The Acid Pro version is the top of the line and the only one to allow plugins, I believe. If you surf over to SF's site, you can check the feature matrix of all the versions and see which suits your needs. For me Acid Pro with a bunch of plugins and about 10 Gigs worth of loops makes for a fun evening!
