Question:
I have an opportunity to have a Trek 700 Multi Track (all-terrain?) bike free except for the cost of shipping. Can anyone tell me what the quality of such a bike is? What year was it made? Is it high end, low end? Great bike for the rider who does ten mile jaunts a few times a week in the summer? Better for quick trips in the park?
Answer:
I own a Trek 700 and find that, for my purposes, its a good but not great bike. As far as I know it is currently in production - I bought mine a few months ago. Its a recreational grade hybrid with entry level components. I commute daily 6 miles each way and found that I was beating up my road bike in the winter dark. I wanted a $300 bike with 38mm wide tires that wasn't as heavy or complicated as similarly equiped mountain bikes. She fits the bill. Shifting is not as smooth as on my road bike but you get what you pay for. I have taken it on 35-40 mile rides and have easliy kept up with the roadies (who weren't trying to lose me.) My only real problem with it is the old style wheelbarrow handlebars. Makes me feel like a little kid at times. The Trek 700 Multi Track is like a Timex watch, its not fashionable but it takes a licking and keeps on ticking.
