John Mayer Bigger than my body effect?

Tagged As: John Mayer Guitar Chord

Question:
What's going on in the guitar track on this tune? (the strange arpeggiated synth-like guitar that runs through most of the song) Is it an E-Bow? Octaver? Ring mod? Filter? Slow gear? VG-88? All of the above? Whatever it is, it's totally bitchen. Kudos to Mayer, his producer, and his guitar player, whoever it is. Any clues as to how they got that sound?

Answer:
he was just on letterman, and he had a keyboard player with him, and mayer and his second guitarist were doubling each other, so that leads me to believe that it was the guy on keyboards That still doesn't mean the keyboard player was doing the part. Maybe you're right. I don't know for sure because I didn't see the show, but....The way the effect works is that you can play rythm (chords) and it chops it up. I know that's not a really good explanation. There is a knob for tempo and as you turn it it speeds up the random filter. Kind of like a tremelo but with a filter. He could very well be playing the same chords but with the envelope effect on. The recording sure does sound like a guitar with some kind of envelope filter. Go to www.musictoys.com and look up Robotalk and listen to the sample. You'll see what I mean.

The effect is a Roger Lynn Adrenalinn box. Arpeggio setting, and I do believe it is a factory setting, by Roger Linn.

John Mayer does all of his guitar parts on CDs first of all.. so '' kudoes to him and his guitar player'' doesnt even make sense. at concerts he has others with him obviously because he can only play one part but nonetheless.. HERE YOU GO..... The arpeggio part on that song is an automated line that comes from a very special guitar pedal. Its by Roger Linn Design, the Adrenalinn Pedal..... this pedal does about anythign imaginable... but ya, mayer did something very cool with it. The arpreggio part is a beat-synched playback line the plays in rhythm with you, because it is basically a computer chip inside, so it actually stays at your tempo. and the effect that mayer is actually playing on when he strums is the most amazing thing ever. its basically a 'random filter'.. so when he plays a note it might throw the pitch up or down, thus the reason it sounds like an effed up wah pedal or something, but its sooo damn cool. i think thats enough. hope it helps..
